Category: General

Starting in 2016, the Instituto Cervantes, the University of Salamanca (USAL) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) will launch a new model for certification in “universal Spanish” called the SIELE, Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española (or literally, International Assessment Service for the Spanish Language), which will integrate all regional varieties of Spanish spoken in different countries around the world.

Spanish speakers, as a group, share 91% of the lexicon, making communication between Spanish speakers from different regions close to optimal.

In this new test, similar to the Test of English as a Foreign Language (the well known TOEFL), scores will be based on a scale from 0 to 1,000 points, eliminating the idea of pass/fail.

The exam will consist of four tests – all of which will be taken online, guaranteeing candidates their test results within two weeks – which can be taken all at once or in part. If the candidate takes the entire exam, he or she will receive a certificate; if only part is taken, the candidate will receive a report of knowledge. Both documents will be valid for two years.

Another novelty of the SIELE is that it allows native Spanish speakers to test their knowledge of their own language, an option that is not available with the DELE.

We will continue to keep you updated.
