What is DELE?

DELE (Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language) exams are official certificates certifying degree of fluency in Spanish.

Who organizes DELE exams?

DELE exams are organized by the Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish government, through the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

Who corrects the exams?

The Universidad de Salamanca in Spain corrects DELE exams.

Who can take the exams?

Anyone who can prove, at the time of registration, that they are a citizen of a country where Spanish is not the official language, can take these exams. Citizens who were born in Spanish speaking countries, but who currently live in countries where Spanish is not the official language can register if they meet at least two of the following conditions, and provide a written statement declaring the same:

  • Spanish is not the native language of either of their parents.
  • Spanish is not the first language they learned.
  • Spanish is not the language they use most frequently.
  • They did not complete all or part of their primary or secondary education in Spanish.

How many levels are there?

DELE is divided into six levels:

* Diploma of Spanish (Level A1 - Breakthrough)

* Diploma of Spanish (Level A2 - Waystage)

* Diploma of Spanish (Level B1 - Threshold)

* Diploma of Spanish (Level B2 - Vantage)

* Diploma of Spanish (Level C1 – Effective Operational Proficiency)

* Diploma of Spanish (Level C2 - Mastery)

Two exams have also been developed for young learners:

* Diploma of Spanish (Level A1 and A2/B1 for young learners between 11 and 17 years old)

Can I take any level?

Yes you can. You don’t need to have a certificate for lower levels in order to take a higher level exam.
